Gin in Spain – Mediterranean Botanicals and a Strong Cocktail Culture

Spain is one of Europe’s leading gin countries, thanks to a vibrant cocktail scene and the popularity of the Spanish-style gin-tonic served in balloon glasses. What once started as an imported spirit has grown into a national trend with its own style and identity.

Spanish distillers make use of regional botanicals such as citrus from Valencia, wild herbs, rosemary, thyme, almonds, coastal plants and juniper from the Pyrenees. Craft producers can be found across Catalonia, Andalusia, the Basque Country and the Balearic Islands, each adding local character to their gins.

The market mixes traditional London Dry profiles with modern Mediterranean expressions, fruit-led styles and gins influenced by wine culture. Bars and restaurants have played a major role in popularising local brands, often presenting gin as a premium, flavour-driven drink.

Spain hasn’t copied the British model, it has shaped gin around its own climate, cuisine and lifestyle, making Mediterranean gin a category in its own right.
