Ùrar Gin is more than just a drink. It’s a quiet meeting between two cultures — a spirit that speaks softly, but with purpose. Rooted in Japanese elegance and Scottish wilderness, this Highland dry gin tells a story of connection, place, and patience.
The story begins in 2013, when founders Robin and Motoko met at the Royal College of Art. Their journey, both personal and creative, led them from Kyushu, Japan, to the Scottish Highlands. In 2019, they settled at Pityoulish Farm near Aviemore, a family-run estate nestled in the Cairngorms National Park.
This distillery, surrounded by forest and silence, became the birthplace of something new: a craft gin inspired by the landscapes they love and the cultures they carry.
At the heart of this spirit lies the rare yuko fruit, a Japanese citrus grown in the coastal forests of Sotome, Nagasaki. Its delicate brightness is paired with wild Scottish juniper berries, handpicked from the ancient Caledonian forest.
Other botanicals include:
Coriander seed
Zesty lemon peel
A subtle touch of Szechuan pepper
Together, they create a bold yet balanced flavour — crisp citrus, forested depth, and a lingering warmth that evolves with every sip.
The botanicals are steeped for three days to extract their full character, then slowly distilled at the award-winning Inshriach Distillery. After distillation, the spirit is rested, then bottled on-site, never rushed, always intentional.
This method reflects the makers’ values: respect for time, attention to detail, and a belief that true quality reveals itself quietly.
“Ùrar” draws from both Gaelic and Japanese:
Ùrar (Gaelic): fresh, newly cut
うら (Ura): hidden, below the surface
These definitions mirror the spirit’s character, fresh, nuanced, and slightly mysterious. It’s a quiet tribute to discovery and depth, not noise and novelty.
This gin is best enjoyed without distraction, neat, over ice, in a G&T with a slice of citrus, or as the anchor in a clean, minimalist cocktail.
Whether you’re a design enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply someone who values intentionality, this craft spirit offers something rare: balance in a bottle.
From Japan’s southern forests to Scotland’s highland slopes, this is a gin that invites you to slow down, taste, and listen.
Ùrar is not just the name on the bottle, it’s a reflection of the entire process behind it. From sourcing wild botanicals to designing the minimalist label, every detail is considered. The gin reflects a desire to create something honest: a product with cultural depth, environmental awareness, and a human touch. Nothing is rushed, nothing is wasted. Even the bottle itself, clean and understated, is part of the message, beauty through simplicity. As the craft spirits world becomes louder and more crowded, this one simply waits for the right people to find it. If you know, you know.
Every detail, every drop, this is more than gin. It’s a quietly crafted experience waiting to be discovered, and that’s why this gin matters.
