Located on the right bank of the Lahinja River near the historic town of Črnomelj in southern Slovenia, this Distillery is deeply connected to the region’s long tradition of milling, craftsmanship and distilling. The distillery takes its name from an old watermill that once stood along the river, a place where local folklore, industry and daily life came together. This historical connection forms the foundation of the distillery’s identity today.
Slovenia has a rich yet often overlooked tradition of distilling, and a new generation of craft distilleries is helping to bring this heritage back into the spotlight. Blackmill Distillery is part of this movement, combining respect for traditional techniques with modern distilling knowledge and carefully selected ingredients. The surrounding landscape, with its forests, rivers and diverse botanicals, provides inspiration for the character and style of the spirits produced here.
While gin represents one of the first spirits released by the distillery, the founders originally envisioned something even more ambitious. Their long-term goal was to create a Slovenian whisky distillery, producing spirits from locally grown grains and allowing them to mature slowly in carefully selected oak casks. The region’s climate, with moderate seasonal variations and relatively stable temperatures, provides favourable conditions for the ageing of whisky and other barrel-matured spirits.
In addition to gin, theDistillery is also developing rum and whisky projects. These spirits require time to mature, often spending several years in oak barrels before they reach the complexity and balance desired by the distillers. As a result, some of these releases will only become available after careful maturation and patience.
By combining local heritage, traditional craftsmanship and modern distilling expertise, Blackmill Distillery represents a new chapter in Slovenian craft spirits. The distillery reflects both the history of the region and the growing international interest in distinctive craft gins and premium barrel-aged spirits from smaller European producers.
